In the 1950s I was 'privileged' to be selected as a grammar school crossing guard and wear the white canvas chest and waist strap with adorned shiny badge. Except for my pocket knife (for playing "stretch") I needed no other accoutrement except my fists for protection from older bullies. Besides, the "responsibility" excused me from leaving and arriving at class 5 minutes tardy because of my "duty" on station.
